Everyone seems to be talking about WoW:Classic, but can we talk about another upcoming title that’s getting some much love. Warcraft 3, this ancient title is soon about to receive a huge makeover. Yes, I’m talking about Warcraft 3: Reforged. Bringing the classic franchise back into the spotlight and it’s about time. Full disclosure, I’m personally biased towards Warcraft 3. It’s a game I spent most of my childhood on. Hell, it’s a game where the MOBA genre was created and popularized through DOTA. Countless hours of my youth were spent strolling around custom maps on Battle.net. Ahhh, times were simpler back then. Anyways, I decided to get back on Warcraft 3 to fill my nostalgic void and to my surprise, a lot has changed. A lot. One thing did stand out though, when I was scrolling through the custom maps, it seemed like the entire log was full of a map called “Burning Crusade”. And let me tell you. This map is phenomenal. If you ever raided Burning Crusade back in World of Warcraft, I can assure you that you are going to enjoy this custom map. It’s almost amazing to see how far custom maps have evolved in Warcraft 3, they’re almost if not better than the actual game itself. I had the opportunity to speak to the map developer about his aspirations for his map and the state of the Warcraft 3 Community.
Squishy: Tordes, the first thing I have to say is I’m thoroughly impressed. The work and detail of your map is by far the most complex and fleshed out map I’ve seen in a long time. It’s almost a stand-alone Multiplayer RPG game in itself. What inspired you to create this?
Tordes: Can’t say something, in particular, inspired me to create this map. I began maps shortly after completing the wc3 campaign and felt a great interest in general. The first version of this map came out 2008, it was super primitive, but it laid the foundation.
Working on something you like is motivational enough, but when you receive positive reviews that amplifies your motivation tremendously. I’ve started receiving feedback pretty early and there’s a reason why. The main reason for that is because of the nostalgia people get from playing the map and it is a very powerful feeling. Of course, the map is well made, I won’t be shy to claim that. There are many WoW themed maps out there that aren’t as popular. But at the same time, it would be silly to say that TBC would be that popular without WoW and it’s amazing lore and nostalgia.
Squishy: With the current state of Warcraft 3, do you think the map will survive long after you’ve hit the barrier of “There are no updates to be done.”
Tordes: I think it will survive for quite a long after we are finished, but constant updating is one of the key factors that keeps the game alive. Anyway, there’s nothing to worry about, we are far from the finish line xD.
Squishy: Warcraft 3: Reforged has a lot of people excited. How do you think it will impact your map if any at all?
Tordes: Obviously we expect a lot of new players due to the hype train of reforged release. But that is only if maps adapt smoothly to the updated client.
Regardless, this map was always at dedicated and competitive players (i.e. hardcore players) instead of casual players (the most common type of player). Even if there’s only one guild among all the players that is capable and willing to do end game content – that’s already a good result.
Squishy: Warcraft 3: Reforged is opening the doors for map-making. Do you think we’ll see a rise in custom maps? What’s your opinion of the map-making scene for WC3?
Tordes: It was always open as we’ve proved :D. Hard to say if there will be a spike in map development. It will definitely start, but will it remain after some time? (the same question goes to WoW Classic). People are saying that they are missing good old games but do they really? I guess we will find out.
Squishy: Is it possible we’ll be seeing a Wrath of the Lich King version in the near future?
Tordes: I don’t like to plan that far, but it’s definitely possible.
Squishy: You’re truly doing something unique with this map. Will you be hosting a competition of some sort in the future, similar to a guild raid race to down Black Temple?
Tordes: There’s always competitive events for each new raid tier. World First boss kills and Best Time Run. Usually, there’s just one competitive guild that is far ahead of others, but it is only a matter of time before they get a rival ;). The community gets more and more skilled with time, they learn to try hard and become addicted.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. As many of you can see through the screenshots and videos, the map looks phenomenal with units almost exactly similar to their WoW counterparts. For more information check out below!
