Oath, an MMORPG that was one of the games that defined what I call the “Kickstarter” era. Oath is a very unique MMO, if you look at it from a logical perspective. It makes absolutely no sense why Oath is so hyped. It brings absolutely no new revolutionizing feature to the genre, the graphics are average compared to modern-day MMOs, so exactly why is Oath so hyped?
Well to answer that question, we’re going to have to take a closer look at what Oath has to offer.
Aside from your standard MMO features like dungeons, raids, and arena-style PvP. Oath boasts about
“advanced social systems such as the revolutionized Guild Land system which allows guilds to purchase land and build their own base that enables special features.”
After dissecting that statement, this sounds a lot like what other MMOs of today are doing such as ArcheAge, Albion Online, and even Ashes of Creation. So to say this is entirely “revolutionizing” is a little bit of an overstatement.
In my personal opinion, I think the reason why Oath has so much hype behind it is because of one simple reason. Transparency. The devs have so far pledged that Oath will remain as an “Anti-Pay2Win” game. Promising that the cash shop will be entirely cosmetic only. Not only that, but the devs have done quite an excellent job in keeping the community informed of major game development news. It’s sad to say, but in this age of gaming, players are simply asking for a fair MMO and Oath was able to capitalize on that.
The one thing I do like about Oath is the fact that it’s bringing back the old school version of MMOs, where group-play remains at the core. It’s also incorporating a much-missed feature of MMOs, trade caravans. The idea where you can actually trade across the map and have the chance to be robbed on the way has always been a popular hit with PvP enthusiasts and even traders like myself.
With everything that’s been mentioned, I think Oath is successful because the developers listen to the community. Cliche I know, but players are just honestly looking for a transparent non-pay2win MMO that offers quite frankly the basics of most modern-day MMOs like Territory War, and trade, and raids.
