A while back we did an interview with Ninja Loot Games. Since then, they have been hard at work hosting small Alpha testing sessions to test the core mechanics of the game. Uncrowned has been given exclusive access to see what the team has been up to including a dungeon and zone preview from DtN Level Designer Pyye.
The Decrepit Plains
Pyye: The Decrepit plains is a really beautiful, but dangerous, zone full of Orcs. It has fallen to ruin with decrepit buildings scattered throughout the land. There are many challenging sub-regions within this zone, creating a multitude of options to explore with your group. Surrounded by two bodies of water, this zone has so much to see, it will be exciting to show it off in full detail at a later date.
In this picture, it features the Witch Master’s tower in the background, looming over the zone, which is a signature landmark that you can’t miss. To ascend this tower and defeat the master at the top, is only one of many great challenges within this zone!
The Descent (Dungeon)
Pyye: This is a medium-tier dungeon off of the Decrepit Plains. It has water zones, caves, magic areas, tight corridors, secret areas, fortresses, all kinds of areas to explore and conquer. In all honesty, I cannot wait to get in here and experience its potential. I think this will be a big hit with our player base and can’t wait for everyone to experience it for themselves.
The picture above is an area known as “5 Bridges”, where islands expand over a body of seemingly tranquil water. It is a very difficult area to navigate and players will have to be on their toes. Far in the distance is an entrance area, full of old buildings to navigate. To enter this dungeon, players must jump into a one-way chasm and pray to their various deities that they made the right decision.
Pyye: This dungeon is likely to be one of the first that a player might experience. Just off a starting area known as Skimmer’s Cove, Seditious Sanctum is occupied by a bandit clan (more details to come) and will have a lot of areas to investigate. Don’t think there will just be bandits in here, expect many unique areas and lots of variety in the NPC’s to battle.
There will be a second half much further inside that will be higher level that will connect to Dissendent’s Outpost. The higher level area will also have the zone’s highest boss within a fortress up in the surrounding cliffs.
In this last picture, you are looking down at the entrance area into the “Inner Sanctum”. Located within a large cavernous system, there will be many choke points that you will have to battle through, as any thriving sanctum should have..
Now I am extremely excited for the dungeons in Defend the Night, it has been a while since an MMO has made a proper old-school vibe dungeon. I think Ninja Loot Studios definitely captured the spirit of classic dungeons like in EverQuest. I believe dungeons should be an aesthetic and immersive experience, as well as challenging. Now and days you see dungeons being used as a mandatory character progression barrier. Dungeons that can be cleared in 15 minutes or less with little to no boss mechanics. I hope Defend the Night can deliver on challenging yet memorable content in these dungeons. Puzzle-solving, challenging boss mechanics, and immersive aesthetics are the hallmarks of a great dungeon.
