Blood of Steel is a MMO/MMORTS, and much like its competitors in the genre such as Conqueror’s Blade and Kingdom Under Fire II, you are tasked with leading your general and troops through an endless conquest. Now I had the pleasure of playing Blood and Steel during its “beta testing” and this is my analysis.
If you’re looking for a game that you expect to blow you out of the water through some revolutionizing features or beautiful graphics, Blood of Steel is not going to be for you. To put it in short, it’s nowhere near to compete against Conqueror’s Blade or Kingdom Under Fire II. However, if you look at Blood and Steel for what it is, which is a generic MMO/MMORTS then I think you will find it surprisingly enjoyable. Now, there’s nothing competitive about Blood of Steel. The competitive scene is quite dead, and I don’t really see it growing anytime soon. I think most potential players consider B&S as a “timewaster” game and for good reason.
Blood of Steel is entirely lobby-based, matches on average last about 5-10 minutes. The maps are somewhat small, and forces players to focus on hero kills rather than any strategic objective. The combat is rather clunky, however, the directional attacks and blocks add a flare to it. (Similar to Mount & Blade Combat).
The good thing that I liked about Blood of Steel is the vast amount of options for heroes. Now, if we’re speaking from a competitive “meta” standpoint. There’s really only about a handful of these heroes that are even worth playing.
I was most disappointed on the “Siege Maps” or maybe I was just spoiled in Conqueror’s Blade. The lack of any type of siege weaponry, the scale of the maps, and just the overall objective seemed to lack any substance behind it. Considering siege maps are really the key in defining games similar to these in the genre, it felt really lackluster.
All in all, if you’re short on time and looking for quick 5-10 min matches or just a casual experience then Blood of Steel is for you.
If you want to try it out for yourself, the Beta is supposedly lasting until December 12th.
