Square Enix reported their latest quarterly earnings report yesterday which showed total revenues of 67.4B Yen ($620M) for the July – September 2019 quarter. MMO revenues were strong this quarter thanks to the launch of Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers on July 2, 2019. Revenues for the company’s MMO division came in at 13.6B Yen ($120M), up from 8.8B Yen ($80M) last quarter. Square Enix attributed the increase in revenues to both box sales of the new expansion as well as an increase in the number of paying subscribers.
Publication revenues also soared quarter over quarter from 3.8B Yen to 5.1B yen thanks to the success of the MANGA UP! app along with increased sales of printed media. Not known to many, but Square Enix also publishes manga in Japan.
Traditional retail game sales came in at only 10.8B Yen since no major titles were released in the quarter. The next huge jump in boxed game sales will likely come early next year with the launch of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
