Well, things are just not looking up for Nexon this year. The MMO industry is known for being ruthless and cutthroat. Over the years we have seen large gaming studios and MMOs take massive hits in their profitability. Take an example from Wildstar (RIP). If anything, this shows us that even titans of the gaming industry are not immune. Nexon once controlled a large market share of the free to play gaming space with blockbuster hits such as the Maplestory series. However, due to poor management and customer service. Nexon has acquired a reputation amongst gamers as one of the worst gaming publishers in the West. To make matters worse, Kim Jung-ju the head of the Nexon powerhouse backed out of an acquisition deal in selling Nexon to potential buyers Netmarble and Kakao. This resulted in spiraling Nexon’s stock into a dip.
Today we have just learned that the Nexon ship is starting to show signs of sinking. According to a Korean source named “Inven”. Nexon “is in the process of dropping or reassigning employees and is ending work on in-development game projects, affecting at the very least 80 people in the process. ” The first confirmed project that is being affected is an Unreal Engine-powered CCG known as Project G. There’s yet to be an official statement, but initial statements insist that there is “no restructuring” and that the company is “reorganizing to cope with the rapidly changing game market trends.” We’ll be sure to update if any new information comes out of Nexon. Show respects to these employees being affected by commenting “F” in the comments. It’s a tough industry and I wish them the best of luck.
